Surgical Procedure
Cheek augmentations are generally completed utilizing an implant, but certain bone cuts and bone segment repositionings are useful in selected individuals. Various sizes and thickness of implants are available to fit individual differences and desires. The implants are most often placed with the patient under sedation and utilizing local anesthesia. The approach is usually through the mouth so no skin incisions are necessary. Rarely are implants placed through a lower eyelid incision. The implants are placed through a tunnel, into a pocket under the soft tissues, and immediately overlying the cheek bones.

Risks and Complications
Bleeding usually comes through the surface of resected bone. However, the use of surgical drains and ice pack immediately applied to the affected area will significantly reduce this risk.
Infection is an uncommon risk. Prophylactic antibiotics is routinely administered pre and postoperatively. After the intra-oral surgery, you need to clean your mouth with a provided mouth wash solution. Nothing must be taken orally for at least 24 hours.
A careful preoperative assessment and a complete set of bone reshaping instruments can prevent such problems.
The facial nerve may be temporarily disturbed. However, full recovery can be expected.
The permanent damage is very rare when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon.
For the mandibular angle resection, there is less chance of injury when using the intra-oral approach than the extra-oral one.
After Care
Special mouth wash should be applied to preserve oral hygeine in case of an intraoral incision.
Recovery
The recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people are back to work within a week or two.

What is a Cheek Augmentation?
Prominent or high cheek bones are a sign of beauty in most cultures. Cheek Augmentation or malar augmentation can give women the high cheekbones they desire. This is accomplished by the surgical implantation of a pliable synthetic implant that is sized for each woman's face. The procedure is also performed to correct deformities and underdeveloped cheekbones.
What will I need to do before the surgery?
Prior to your surgery you will be seen in the office for a consultation with your physician concerning the extent of the procedure and to discuss the results that can be expected. A careful examination of the cheek structure will be conducted. There will be photographs taken before and after your surgery so that you can compare the improvements of your surgery. Other subjects that will be discussed in the consultation include the type of anesthesia (local or general) to be used and the risks involved. How much pain is there?

What does the surgery consist of?
The surgery will usually begin with you receiving some medication to help you relax. Once the anesthesia has taken effect the doctor will begin the procedure by making incisions either in the mouth or under the eyes to allow placement of the implants. Incisions inside the mouth are more common and allow the patient the added advantage of no visible incisions. The entire procedure should take anywhere from one half to a couple of hours depending on the procedures to be performed.
What should I expect following the procedure?
After the procedure is completed you will be able to leave our office as soon as you feel able. You will experience some temporary swelling and bruising around the treated area. This can be minimized be applying cold compresses and keeping the head elevated while reclining. You may also experience tightness or numbness around the treated area which can make chewing difficult. Any pain you experience will be mild to moderate and can be controlled by oral medications. Most people are completely ambulatory immediately following this procedure, but rest is recommended for the first day after surgery. Patients are usually able to return to normal activities within a week, although strenuous exercise should be avoided for several weeks along with any other activities that may cause a rise in your blood pressure. Chewing may be difficult for a few days.
