Facts at a glance

Surgical Procedure
Face LiftProcedure Incisions usually begin above the hairline at the temples, follow the natural line in front of the ear, and curve behind the earlobe into the crease behind the ear, and into or along the lower scalp so as to make scars nearly invisible.
In general, the surgeon separates the skin from the fat and muscle below. Fat may be trimmed or suctioned from around the neck and chin to improve the contour. The surgeon then tightens the underlying muscle and membrane, pulls the skin back, and removes the excess. Stitches secure the layers of tissue and close the incisions.
After deep tissues are tightened, the excess skin is pulled up and back, trimmed and sutured into place.
Duration of Operation
Three hours.
Risks and Complications
Complications that can occur include hematoma (a collection of blood under the skin), injury to the nerves that control facial muscles (usually temporary), infection, and reactions to the anesthesia. Poor healing of the skin is most likely to affect smokers. Most of the incision is concealed and not noticeable. It is most likely to be heavy behind the ear where there is greater tension.
After Care
Following surgery, a small thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin behind your ear to drain any blood that might collect there. The surgeon may also wrap your head loosely in bandages to minimize bruising and swelling.
Recovery
The recovery takes one to two weeks. Most people are happy with the result and back to work within a week or two.
Result
Facial profile looks more youthful.
Hospital Admission
One night admission to hospital.
Anesthetic
General anesthesia (you are asleep)
Pre Operative Care

Post Operative Care
It is important to follow a careful plan on return to strenuous activity, in order to avoid tension on the wound (which could lead to worse scarring).

Frequently Asked Questions

FAQ : Surgical Procedure
What is a face lift?
As we grow older the skin covering the fatty tissue on our faces begins to loosen and sag in various places. This loosening of skin produces wrinkles and enhances the skin folds of the face, especially around the jaw, chin and neck area. Rhytidectomy, or facelift, is a procedure that tightens the muscles and skin of face producing a younger looking appearance. In many cases a facelift is performed along with other procedures such as brow and forehead lifts, eyelid surgery, facial liposuction, chin augmentation and nose surgery.
Can surgery be done without scars?
The scars from facelift surgery usually fade and are barely perceptible. In some patients, especially younger ones, endoscopic surgery can be used to lift the eyebrows, remove frown lines, elevate the cheek and jowls, and tighten the neck. This endoscopic surgery can be done with tiny scars. However, if there is excessive skin, it must be removed for the best results through standard facelift incisions.
FAQ : Result
What are some of the most common benefits of this surgery?
While this procedure cannot stop the aging process, it can often make a person appear to be a decade younger than their actual age. Facelifts are the fifth most commonly performed plastic surgery procedures in the United States.
How long does a facelift last?
No one can say for sure. The clock is turned back, but keeps on running. Ten years later, you will look better than if you never had surgery. Many patients never have a second lift, while others may desire further surgery seven to 15 years later.
